How do I properly clean a composting toilet?
Anyone who uses a composting toilet will sooner or later ask themselves:
How do I clean them effectively – without chemicals and without damaging the materials?
Here you will find the most important tips and no-gos for a clean, long-lasting composting toilet.
1. Water is your best friend
Urine and feces consist largely of water-soluble components .
For daily cleaning, it is often sufficient:
- clear water
- a damp cloth
- or some mild soapy water
In everyday life, you often don’t need more – less is more here.
⚠️ 2. No vinegar cleaner!
Even though vinegar cleaner works naturally:
❌ Please do not use if you have a silicone odor trap.
The acetic acid attacks the material and can make the valve brittle or leaky.
🍋 3. Better: citric acid
If you want to remove stubborn deposits (e.g. urine stones), citric acid is a better choice.
It has a descaling, antibacterial effect and is gentler on silicone and plastics .
It is best to dissolve it in warm water and apply it with a spray bottle.
🧴 4. Disinfection – but properly
For occasional disinfection (e.g., after storage or heavy use), you can use an alcohol-water mixture —e.g., isopropanol or ethanol diluted with water.
Good to know:
Our divider insert is resistant to alcohol and diluted acids , so you can easily clean it with it without damaging the material.
