Cleaning composting toilets – effectively, gently and without chemicals
Anyone who uses a composting toilet will sooner or later ask themselves:
How do I clean them thoroughly without using harsh cleaning agents or damaging the material?
Here you can learn how to keep your composting toilet hygienically clean – easily, sustainably, and without chemicals.
1. Water is your best friend
Urine and feces consist mostly of water-soluble components.
For daily cleaning, it is usually sufficient:
- clear water
- a damp cloth
- or mild soapy water
More is usually all you need in everyday life. This way, you protect materials and the environment at the same time.
2. Do not use vinegar cleaner
Even though vinegar cleaner works naturally, it is not suitable if your composting toilet has a silicone odor trap.
The acid attacks the silicone, makes it brittle and can impair its sealing function.
3. Better: citric acid
For stubborn deposits – such as urine stones – citric acid is the better choice.
It has a descaling, antibacterial effect and is gentle on plastic and silicone.
Simply dissolve in warm water, pour into a spray bottle and apply to the affected areas.
4. Disinfection – but properly
For occasional disinfection, for example after prolonged storage or intensive use, a diluted alcohol-water mixture (e.g. isopropanol or ethanol) is suitable.
Our divider insert is resistant to alcohol and diluted acids, so you can clean it with it without worry.
