How does the odor trap work?
A central element of every good composting toilet is the odor trap .
Urine itself often has little smell – the problems start with air circulation .
That's why we rely on a particularly effective silicone membrane valve - the heart of our odor trap.
How it works
✅ Liquid can pass through – the urine flows easily into the canister
🚫 Odors stay outside – no air circulation = no stench
🔁 Spillover is prevented – ideal even when moving, e.g. in a vehicle
What to do if urine doesn't drain well?
Some users find that the valve is a bit sluggish – no problem!
✂️ You can carefully shorten the silicone valve to adjust the flow.
But be careful: Please do not cut off too much , otherwise the valve will lose its sealing effect.
Important to know:
🔄 The silicone valve is a wearing part – can (and should) be easily replaced if necessary
🧪 Avoid vinegar cleaners! These attack the silicone and make it brittle. Better: warm water and mild soap.
💨 Even with a trap, the canister should be emptied regularly —at least every 1-2 days. Otherwise, the ammonia buildup will cause a real "wow" moment when you open it... and not in a good way.
Conclusion: Small, invisible – but absolutely crucial
The odor trap ensures that your composting toilet is odor-free and suitable for everyday use – whether in the garden, in your van, or at a festival. And with a little care, it will last a long time.
