Wo kann ich Urin aus der Trenntoilette entsorgen?

Where can I dispose of urine from the composting toilet?

Urine is not waste – but a valuable raw material that consists of 90-95% water and contains many nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
But where do you put it after using the toilet?

Here are the four common ways you can dispose of urine safely and sensibly:

✅ 1. Pour into the drain / toilet

Easiest and possible everywhere:
Simply pour it down the toilet or drain.
The sewage system easily absorbs urine; the treatment plants are designed for this. Ideal for use on the go, at home, or in cities.

✅ 2. At disposal stations at the campsite

Almost every campsite with infrastructure has a so-called grey water disposal station – you can also dispose of urine there.

Pay attention to signs – and ask if in doubt.
Our tip: Take a small pouring sieve with you to work cleanly.

✅ 3. Use diluted as liquid fertilizer in the garden

Urine is rich in nitrogen – ideal for:

  • vegetable beds
  • fruit trees
  • Flowers or hedges

Important: Only apply diluted , e.g. mix with water in a ratio of 1:10.
It is best to water directly into the root area in the morning or evening – and not spray over leaves.

Works best in healthy people without medication.

⚠️ 4. Add undiluted to the compost heap (varies regionally)

Some regions allow urine to be added directly to the compost as a nitrogen booster.
But: This is not permitted everywhere and excessive amounts can lead to odor problems or imbalance in the compost.

✅ Allowed: often on your own property
❌ Prohibited: sometimes in urban areas or allotment gardens

If in doubt, ask your local council or check the waste collection calendar.

🚫 When urine should not be released into the environment:

If you take medication regularly , urine should not be put in the garden or on the compost – because of possible residues (see this article ).
Then please: always dispose of it via the sewer.
